The sixth chapter of the Avadhuta Gita strips away the illusions of identity, separation, and dualistic thinking. Verse 6:16

Sanskrit:
पुरुषापुरुषस्य विनष्टमिति
वनितावनितस्य विनष्टमिति ।
यदि चैकनिरन्तरसर्वशिव-
मविनोदविनोदमतिश्च कथम् ।। १६।।

Transliteration:
puruṣāpuruṣasya vinaṣṭamiti
vanitāvanitasya vinaṣṭamiti
yadi caikanirantarasarvaśiva-
mavinodavinodamatiśca katham

English Meaning:
The Self is the annihilation of the masculine and the non-masculine. It is the annihilation of the feminine and the non-feminine. If there is only one indivisible, all-encompassing Absolute, how can there be awareness of joy or the absence of joy?

Hindi Translation:
यह आत्मा पुरुष और अपुरुष का लोप है, स्त्री और अ-स्त्री का भी। यदि केवल एक अखंड, सर्वव्यापक शिव तत्व है, तो आनंद और अनानंद की अनुभूति कैसी?


Verse 6:17

Sanskrit:
यदि मोहविषादविहीनपरो
यदि संशयशोकविहीनपरः ।
यदि चैकनिरन्तरसर्वशिव-
महमेति ममेति कथं च पुनः ।। १७।।

Transliteration:
yadi mohaviṣādavihīnaparo
yadi saṁśayaśokavihīnaparaḥ
yadi caikanirantarasarvaśiva-
mahameti mameti kathaṁ ca punaḥ

English Meaning:
If the Supreme is free of delusion and sorrow, doubt and grief—then how can there be "I" and "mine"?

Hindi Translation:
यदि परमात्मा मोह और विषाद, शंका और शोक से रहित है, तो “मैं” और “मेरा” का विचार कैसे संभव है?


Verse 6:18

Sanskrit:
ननु धर्मविधर्मविनाश इति
ननु बन्धविबन्धविनाश इति ।
यदि चैकनिरन्तरसर्वशिवं-
मिहदुःखविदुःखमतिश्च कथम् ।। १८।।

Transliteration:
nanu dharmavidharmavināśa iti
nanu bandhavibandhavināśa iti
yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṁ
mihaduḥkhaviduḥkhamatiśca katham

English Meaning:
The Supreme is beyond virtue and vice, bondage and liberation. Then how can sorrow or the idea of its absence arise?

Hindi Translation:
जब धर्म-अधर्म, बंधन और मुक्ति का लोप हो गया है, तब यहाँ दुःख या अदुःख की अनुभूति कैसे हो सकती है?


Verse 6:19

Sanskrit:
न हि याज्ञिकयज्ञविभाग इति
न हुताशनवस्तुविभाग इति ।
यदि चैकनिरन्तरसर्वशिवं
वद कर्मफलानि भवन्ति कथम् ।। १९।।

Transliteration:
na hi yājñikayajñavibhāga iti
na hutāśanavastuvibhāga iti
yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṁ
vada karmaphalāni bhavanti katham

English Meaning:
There is no real difference between sacrificer and sacrifice, nor between fire and offerings. So how can the fruits of karma exist?

Hindi Translation:
यज्ञकर्ता और यज्ञ, अग्नि और हविष्य का भेद नहीं है। यदि सब एक ही शिवस्वरूप है, तो कर्मों के फल कैसे संभव हैं?


Verse 6:20

Sanskrit:
ननु शोकविशोकविमुक्त इति
ननु दर्पविदर्पविमुक्त इति ।
यदि चैकनिरन्तरसर्वशिवं
ननु रागविरागमतिश्च कथम् ।। २०।।

Transliteration:
nanu śokaviśokavimukta iti
nanu darpavidarpavimukta iti
yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṁ
nanu rāgavirāgamatiśca katham

English Meaning:
If the Self is free from sorrow and freedom from sorrow, pride and absence of pride—then how can there be attachment or detachment?

Hindi Translation:
जब आत्मा शोक और अशोक, गर्व और अगर्व से रहित है, तो राग और विराग की भावना कैसे हो सकती है?


Verse 6:21

Sanskrit:
न हि मोहविमोहविकार इति
न हि लोभविलोभविकार इति ।
यदि चैकनिरन्तरसर्वशिवं
ह्यविवेकविवेकमतिश्च कथम् ।। २१।।

Transliteration:
na hi mohavimohavikāra iti
na hi lobhavilobhavikāra iti
yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṁ
hyavivekavivekamatiśca katham

English Meaning:
There is no transformation called illusion or disillusion, greed or lack of greed. Then how can there be discrimination or its absence?

Hindi Translation:
मोह और विमोह, लोभ और विलोभ — यह सभी विकार नहीं हैं। यदि आत्मा अखंड शिव है, तो विवेक और अविवेक की अनुभूति कैसे?

English Meaning:
If "I" and "you" are false ideas, and if teacher and student distinctions break down, and all bodies and worlds are imagined—how can there be anything to bow to?

Hindi Summary:
जब ‘मैं’ और ‘तू’, गुरु और शिष्य, देह और लोक — सब माया हैं, तो किसे प्रणाम करें?


Verse 6:25–26

English Meaning:
The Self is neither passionate nor passionless, neither embodied nor disembodied. It is ever pure, still, and beyond the duality of behavior. How can any act of salutation arise?

रजोगुण और विरजोगुण, शरीर और अशरीर— जब कुछ भी शेष नहीं, तब क्रिया भी मिथ्या है, प्रणाम भी व्यर्थ।


Verse 6:27

Sanskrit:
विन्दति विन्दति न हि न हि यत्र
छन्दोलक्षणं न हि न हि तत्र ।
समरसमग्नो भावितपूतः
प्रलपति तत्त्वं परमवधूतः ।।

Transliteration:
vindati vindati na hi na hi yatra
chandolakśaṇaṁ na hi na hi tatra
samarasamagno bhāvitapūtaḥ
pralapati tattvaṁ paramavadhūtaḥ

English Meaning:
Where nothing is known, where no poetic structure exists, the one merged in pure being—the liberated Avadhuta—speaks of truth in simple prattle.

Hindi Translation:
जहाँ कुछ जाना नहीं जाता — वहाँ छंद भी नहीं होता। जो समरसता में लीन है, वही परम अवधूत सहजता से सत्य कहता है।

In this series of contemplative verses, the Avadhuta points again and again to one essential truth: All perceived opposites — joy and sorrow, birth and death, knowledge and ignorance — dissolve in the light of non-duality. The Absolute is not just beyond opposites; it is untouched by the very idea of “difference.”
